With over 90% wetland loss in the Essex Region, ERCA is working to protect and restore wetland habitat and the important ecological functions they provide. In addition to supporting a diversity of wildlife, wetlands also serve to reduce flooding, improve water quality and provide recreational opportunities.
Projects are typically located in former/historical wetland sites or in low-lying, poorly drained or seasonally flooded areas, and generally range from approximately 0.25 acres to 2+ acres in size. Following excavation, they are seeded and planted with native wetland and riparian vegetation.
Funding opportunities are available for qualifying wetland creation projects.
