A Summer of Celebration at the John R. Park Homestead

Thursday, July 7, 2022

The historic home of John and Amelia Park turns 180 this year, and the John R. Park Homestead has a Summer of Celebrations planned to mark this significant milestone.

“We’ve planned special themes for each weekend, with some weekday special experiences as well,” says Kris Ives, the Homestead’s Curator. “Sugar Cookie Day, Ice Cream Sunday, Lake Erie Love Day and Butterfly Skies are just some of the ways we will travel back in time with families this summer.”

There are also special ticketed experiences inspired by popular culture – like Fantastic Beasts of the Essex Region, an Enchanted Environment exploration of our region’s special gifts, and a Night at the Museum – all with a pioneer twist. Get hands-on with workshops such as basket weaving and flower pressing.

One of the many special events includes Dark Sky Music – a Cornerstone Concert presented by   4th Wall Music on July 17th. This special chamber concert will take place in the new Conservation Centre at the Homestead overlooking Lake Erie beginning at 7:30pm, and feature music inspired by the skies. Guests will be treated to a special John R. Park After Dark tour, and then remain for an Under the Stars interpretation in partnership with the Windsor Chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. Tickets for this special event are available here.

On August 6, the birthday celebrations kick into high gear with special exhibits and birthday card activities.  On August 7, the Lost Arts Festival returns featuring re-enactors, a Sheep to Shawl demonstration, the Plein Air Painters and more. As well, architectural tours of the Greek Revival home – one of only six in Ontario – will be hosted as part of this special event.

Information is on the ERCA homepage at essexregionconservation.ca . While admission for many events is available at the door, in some cases, capacity is limited and advanced tickets are required.  Please be sure to check the website to avoid disappointment.

Until Labour Day, the John R. Park Homestead Museum and Conservation Centre are open Tuesday through Sunday from 11am – 6pm. Check the website for a listing of special events and activities. The John R. Park Homestead Conservation Area is located at 915 County Road 50 on the shores of Lake Erie.
