ERCA Inviting Feedback on Conservation Area Strategy

Essex - ERCA has completed its draft Conservation Areas Strategy and is inviting public feedback. Guests are invited to a public Open House on Wednesday, November 13 from 1pm - 3pm at the Essex Centre Sports Complex. A presentation on the Strategy’s details will take place at 1:30pm

In December 2020, changes to the Conservation Authorities Act resulted in the introduction of mandatory programs and services which are to be delivered by all Conservation Authorities.

Ontario Regulation 686/21 defines one of the mandatory programs as the “conservation and management of lands.” Further, Section 10 of the regulation requires all Conservation Authorities to prepare a Conservation Area Strategy, for all lands owned or controlled by their Authority, by December 31, 2024

“There has been significant growth in visitation to local conservation areas and trails since the pandemic,” says Kevin Money, Director of Conservation Services. “ERCA works to balance the mandatory services we must provide with the public’s wish list for programming and amenities, within the budget constraints we face. Gathering feedback from the public helps us to best determine where investments in conservation areas should be made.”

The in-person Open House will take place from 1pm to 3pm on Wednesday, November 13 at the Essex Centre Sports Complex, located at 60 Fairview Ave. West, Essex. A virtual presentation option will be available online that evening at 6:00pm. You can register for the virtual option here.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority is a public sector organization established by the Province of Ontario in 1973 and governed by local municipalities. For 50 years, it has delivered programs and services that further the conservation, restoration, development and management of natural resources in watersheds in the Windsor-Essex-Pelee Island region.
